SPECIES: White Oak

Appearance

The heartwood of white oak is wheat in color with some boards exhibiting a pinkish tint or a slight grayish cast. The sapwood tends to be white to cream in color.

Color: White oak has considerable variation among boards in color and grain texture, but variations not as pronounced as in red oak.

Grain: The grain of white oak is open, with long rays and occasional swirls and burls. Plainsawn white oak boards have a plumed or flared grain appearance, while riftsawn white oak tends to have a tighter grain pattern, minimal figuring and quartersawn white oak has an irregular pattern, generally called flake.

Workability

White oak has excellent machining qualities and sands satisfactorily if the correct sanding sequence is followed. White oak stains very well and will stain evenly. However, during some finishing process, tannins at the surface in white oak may turn the wood green or brown. This is more evident with products that have a high water content, such as wood bleach and water-based finishes.
